Know Your Neighborhood: The Printing House
The building at 313-315 Vine Street at the corner of N. Orianna Street was built in 1899 and was the Philadelphia location of the Charles E. Brown Co., a printing & engraving company which was founded in 1850, and also had locations in New York City and Reading, PA. The ad is from 1902.
In 1914, Charles E. Brown Co. merged into the business of Peter Coughlin becoming the Coughlin-Brown Co. and closing the Philadelphia location. At that time, both companies primary line of business was printing for the hat trade.
A search of the address brings up several shoe & leather related businesses that were at that address after 1914. They include Shingle Leather Co., Philadelphia Belting Co., Girard Shoe Manufacturing, Adelphia Shoe Co., Shoe Manufacturers Assoc. of Philadelphia and others.
Also listed at this address (in 1919) was Reid & Pancoast Inc., who made a "prophylactic cabinet" for pressure cleaning of the teeth .
The building is now in residential use under the name The Printing House.
