Know your Neighborhood: Lawrence St. houses, circa 1785
On the west side of the 300-block of N. Lawrence Street are some of the oldest buildings in the neighborhood. The group of late Georgian-style row houses at 306, 308, 310, 312, 314, and 316 N Lawrence St. was built about 1785. The homes are historically called "Captains Row," as ship captains made these homes their residences 200 years ago. The houses are faced with Flemish bond brick with glazed headers. They're detailed with marble stoops, wood box cornices, gable roofs, and dormers. Instead of pent eaves, the N. Lawrence Street group sports paired brick belt courses above the first story. The B & W photo is from 1931.
